Recapitulation
After Europe and America, Africa is the third continent in implementing a human rights protection system, based on a series of legal instruments which have as a focal point the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, an array of political and quasi-judicial institutions in charge of furthering the culture of human rights and ensuring its respect, and more recently, a Court whose mission it is to issue decisions that are binding for the States, and highlighting when they fail to honour the obligations they have to abide by in that subject matter. This article discusses all these aspects pertaining to the human rights situation in Africa, through examples and statistics allowing for an assessment of the system.
